Public Education
ARG and its employees have been actively engaged in the education market for over 20 years and have successfully penetrated the voice-silenced interpretation niche in public schools across America. ARG, is now focused to concentrate all of its energies on maximizing marketing and sales opportunities in this market as well as others requiring wireless close-quarters or voice-silenced communication.
At no time in history has the need for effective multilingual communication been of more critical importance. Nowhere is this need more pronounced than in education, not only to reach and educate students and parents, but to stimulate the learning of English, as well.
The opportunities for the TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silenced wireless communication system to facilitate parental involvement in education is limited only by the number of schools and school districts. The massive number of limited English-proficient parents whose children are enrolled in all of the public schools across the United States represents an unprecedented and immediate opportunity.
- ARG products are being used successfully in public school systems throughout the United States.
- ARG has established acceptance and credibility with educators.
- The TALK & LISTEN KIT® is endorsed by national, regional, state and local educational organizations.
- ARG builds on a continuous marketing and sales contract with the largest bilingual education association in America.
The national agenda for education as presented by the Leave No Child Behind Act of 2001 recognizes the need to compete in a global market. The Act recommends a minimum fluency in two languages for all children in the U.S. regardless of primary language by 2015. To this end a number of states have started "dual immersion" pilot programs using the TALK AND LISTEN KIT® to teach English-only students a foreign language simultaneously with the instruction being given to the limited English-proficient students.
Considering there are more than 52,000,000 students in over 2,000,000 classrooms in the 111,000 private and public schools across the United States, the need for the TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silenced wireless communication system in classroom applications is no less than staggering.
Community Involvement in Head Start
The effort in education to date has emphasized parental involvement. A new and potentially much larger market in education has recently begun to develop for use of the Talk and Listen Kit®.
The TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silenced wireless communication system has recently been purchased by Head Start centers in many states for communication with limited English-proficient parents. The National Association of Head Start Programs reports that there are a total of 14,370 Head Start centers in the United States serving 727,694 families. Twenty-two percent (163,242) of all limited English- proficient families served by Head Start speak a language at home other than English. These figures represent a significant market for Talk and Listen Kits® where Head Start programs serve a multilingual population of children and their parents.
Legal/courtroom Interpreting
Legal interpreting, or court or judicial interpreting, takes place in courts of justice or administrative tribunals and wherever a legal proceeding is held. Legal interpreting can take the form of consecutive interpreting of witnesses' statements, for example, or simultaneous interpreting of the entire proceedings by electronic means for one or more of the people in attendance.
Depending on the regulations and standards adhered to per state and venue, court interpreters usually work alone when providing consecutive interpreting services, or as a team when simultaneous interpreting is required. In addition to mastery of the source and target languages, an excellent knowledge of law and court procedure is required of court interpreters.
Often they are required to have formal authorization from the State to work in the courts — and are then called sworn interpreters.
Courtrooms and judicial proceedings are constantly faced with having to address cultural challenges in the courtroom, to meet and overcome language barriers.
How are you communicating with the defendants and participants in your courtrooms who don’t speak English?
The TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silencing wireless communication system facilitates simultaneous interpretation, and assures that any and all interpretations of the entire proceedings can be heard by all of the limited English participants – no matter where they sit, no matter what language they speak or understand.
The TALK AND LISTEN KIT® allows voice-silent simultaneous interpretation of the courtroom proceedings, so ALL participants hear the same message at the same time in their native language, in an unobtrusive, non-disrupting manner.
As our society becomes more diverse, courtrooms and city administrators throughout the country are finding it difficult to communicate with all citizens in their community. The TALK AND LISTEN KIT® will help courtrooms and judicial proceedings break the language barrier, while complying with the 2003 Supreme Court rulings on interpretation.
How are Court Interpreters communicating with the limited English participants in the courtroom? Are attendees disrupted by the voice of the interpreter such as the Court Reporter and the Jury Members? View how our system works(video) and discover how you may cut traditional meeting times in-half by interpreting up to 8 languages simultaneously – without disruption.
Our system is completely mobile and silent, allowing the listeners (Defendant, Witnesses and limited English family members) and interpreters to sit appropriately without being segregated into linguistic groups or disrupting the audience around them. The listeners hear the message through tiny receivers in their native language in a non-threatening manner. The interpreter speaks into our patented PrivacyMic®, a voice-silencing device with a wireless transmission, so that the audience around them is not disturbed by his/her voice!
- Simultaneous – Allows up to 8 interpreters to speak at one time
- PrivacyMic® - Allows interpreters to speak without disrupting the audience around them
- Accuracy – Interpreter may sit in prime position to accurately interpret everyone’s message
- Mobility – LEP listeners may sit anywhere without being segregated or feeling embarrassed
- Cuts Meeting Times In Half – No stopping or starting to interpret message
- Custom Designed – Meets your exact needs and budget
The U.S. Supreme Court held (1) that discrimination on the basis of language proficiency is held (1) that discrimination on the basis of language proficiency is discrimination on the basis of national origin under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and (2) that treating people with different needs in the same way is not equal treatment. Lau v. Nichols, 414 U.S. 563 (1974)
Tours, Guides and Escort Interpreting
In escort interpreting, an interpreter accompanies a person or a delegation on a tour, on a visit, or to a meeting or interview. An interpreter in this role is called an escort interpreter or an escorting interpreter. This is liaison interpreting.
Talk and Listen Kits can be used not only where ambient noise may interfere, such as a tour of Niagara Falls or a noisy construction site, but also in any quiet environment where it is essential that the speaker not be overheard, such as when touring a hospital, art gallery or business environment.
Corporate Environments, Job Training, Manufacturing, Safety and Public Service Interpreting
Also called community interpreting, this type of interpreting takes place in the following fields : legal, health and local government services, manufacturing, social services, housing, environmental health, and education welfare. In community interpreting, there appear factors which are determinant and affect production, such as emotional content, hostile or polarized surroundings, created stress, the power relationship between the participants, and the degree of responsibility of the interpreter — in many cases more than extreme; even the life of the other person depending, in many cases, on the interpreter's work.
A growing number of U.S. corporations are increasingly dependent on an immigrant work force. They are frequently forced to conduct repeated training sessions for different linguistic worker trainee groups at considerable cost in time and resources. When using the TALK AND LISTEN KIT®all training can be done for up to 8 different language/listening groups at the same time. The cost and time savings to both industry and government supported training programs should be even more dramatic than that experienced in education.
The TALK AND LISTEN KIT® has a definite application where multi-lingual groups undergo training or where ambient noise and/or safety are issues.
In addition to training a multilingual workforce, the TALK AND LISTEN KIT® can be used to provide essential communication between workers where noise currently interferes with normal speech communication, such as in manufacturing and processing plants.
Health and Medical interpreting
A subset of public service interpreting, medical interpreting consists of communication between a medical caregiver and a patient and/or family members, facilitated by one qualified to provide such a service. The interpreter must have a strong knowledge of medicine, common procedures, the patient interview and exam process, and the day-to-day workings of the hospital or clinic, in order to be able to serve both the patient and the caregiver. Medical interpreters often act as cultural liaisons for those who are not familiar with, or particularly comfortable in, a hospital setting.
There are unlimited potential applications for the TALK AND LISTEN KIT® in health care delivery. Nearly every community in the United States that has a large population of school children with limited English- proficient parents will have similar deterrents to adequate communication in public health. The National Association of Community Health Clinics estimates that as much as 35% of the patient population served are not proficient in English.
The TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silencing wireless communication system has already positively impacted educational services provided to pregnant women, their spouses, parenting groups and other health care efforts. Talk and Listen Kits are currently being used successfully by health departments, clinics and hospitals in several states for counseling and training in prenatal and post-natal care, family planning and preventive medicine.
Conference and Meeting Interpreting
Conference interpreting is interpreting in a conference environment. Conference interpreting may be simultaneous or consecutive, although the advent of multi-lingual meetings has seen a massive drop in the use of consecutive interpretation over the last 20 years.
Conference interpreting is roughly but not exactly split into two types of market: the institutional market and the private market. International institutions (EU, UN, EPO, etc), holding multilingual meetings, often favor interpreting from a number of foreign languages into the interpreters' mother tongue. Local private markets tend to hold bilingual meetings (the local language plus one other) and the interpreters work both into and out of their mother tongue. The markets are by no means mutually exclusive.
The Talk and Listen Kits® have strong applications in the meeting/convention industry. ARG’s wireless voice-silenced configurations are used in plenary sessions for simultaneous interpretation to international audiences. Costly sound-proof booths and hardwired listening equipment are now obsolete. For example, TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silencing wireless communication systems are being used effectively in Saudi Arabia, Bolivia and Argentina for simultaneous interpretation at conferences and meetings of multilingual judicial, medical, corporate and religious organizations.
Technical Interpreting
The question often arises of why we need specialized technical simultaneous interpreters for certain jobs. Technical simultaneous interpreters are simultaneous interpreters with in-depth knowledge of a particular technical field. Competence as a simultaneous interpreter is not enough.
It is impossible to interpret a speech, unless the interpreter has an extensive knowledge of the technology involved and the latest background information or relevant knowledge in both the source language and the target language. Only the interpreter who fulfills those criteria is a technical simultaneous interpreter.
Technical interpreting is a highly specialized area of translations or interpreting, which requires accurate and complete translation, orally and at the same rate of speech as the speaker, with only a few seconds of lag time. Technical simultaneous interpreters must have, not only complete mastery of the languages, but also of the technical nomenclatures. In addition, they must have technical knowledge of the subject to be discussed, as well as the required simultaneous interpretation training, skill, and experience.
However, even the best simultaneous interpreters cannot do a proper job unless they have appropriate equipment. Therefore, simultaneous interpretation or translation must be approached as a coherent whole. This means that interpreters or translators and interpretation equipment must be selected and designed to work together for the specific interpretation project.
The TALK & LISTEN KIT® voice-silenced wireless communication interpretation equipment is ideally suited for the purposes of technical interpreting. The TALK & LISTEN KIT® is a portable interpretation system that allows for wireless communication between an interpreter/translator and foreign speaking or hard of hearing listeners. The system is ideal for technical events such as scientific, medical, manufacturing, safety, training, instruction, or presentations of any type at multiple venues.
